In 2017, the WSHA Medicaid Committee initiated communications with Wisconsin Medicaid leadership related to the extraordinarily high rate of prior authorization (PA) denials for SLP services. The rate of denials for SLP services was two to three times the rate of denials for PA requests from physical and occupational therapists. Medicaid leadership acknowledged the need for revising their PA review process and they subsequently implemented important reforms. Data provided by Medicaid reflect that their reforms resulted in a 17% increase in SLP PA approvals when comparing the period just prior to the reforms (2017-2018) to the period post PA reforms (2018-2019). The post reform time period also reflected a 60% increase in the number of SLP PA requests.

A member of the Medicaid review team, Ms. Laura Triller, MA, CCC-SP, will be presenting at our upcoming convention where she will highlight significant Medicaid updates impacting Wisconsin SLPs. Members of the WSHA Medicaid Committee will also attend this session.

The WSHA Medicaid Committee is very interested in getting feedback and providing critical information and updates to members related to Wisconsin Medicaid. Members are encouraged to enroll in the Member Forum on Medicaid on the WSHA website.
