DHS completes Medicaid reorganization

A reorganization of the positions that oversee the state Medicaid program went into effect at the beginning of the year.  This includes positions that oversee Medicaid prior authorization.  WSHA was instrumental in advocating for this change during the 2015-17 Biennial Budget cycle.  Oversight of Medicaid prior authorization will now be part of the new Division of Medicaid Services and administrators overseeing the program will report to Medicaid Director Michael Heifetz.  Prior to this change oversight of prior authorization was managed by the Office of the Inspector General, which was created in October, 2011.  During this time WSHA members reported a spike in prior authorization denials and returns.  WSHA created an internal task force and spearheaded an external group of stakeholders to advocate for reform.  In addition to forcing change at the Department level, a legislative committee convened hearings to further examine    the problems that plague the prior authorization process.  We look forward to regular quarterly meetings with the Department and continued work with the Legislature to further improve the Medicaid prior authorization process.  Your membership helps support WSHA's legislative activities.
