Student Weekend Speakers Following is a note from the Conference Co-Chairs, Devon Bobulsky, Katie Hatke, Emily Isaksson and Melissa Manjarrés:
We were excited to welcome 160 students and 28 speakers from the Milwaukee area to the 2011 WSHA Student Conference hosted by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Department at Marquette University. Speech-language pathology students from all seven Wisconsin university programs participated in the Friday and Saturday sessions. For the first time in the nine-year history of this event, audiology specific sessions were offered for students from Wisconsin’s two audiology graduate programs. Friday night sessions focused on developing leadership skills through the topics of private practice ownership, biomedical ethics and state association volunteering as seen through the eyes of Jordan Beck, Alyson Isaksson, and Sherri Zelazny, who encouraged students to be a thriving clinician in the field after graduation. Following the presentations, students gathered into small groups to discuss ways in which they plan to be leaders and utilize the skills that the speakers discussed. During small group discussions, students also shared their experiences with their own NSSLHA chapters, providing tips for what has been successful at their schools. Overall, Friday night was a success, and the students received great advice from the speakers.
The event continued early Saturday morning with four key note speakers on the topics of craniofacial anomalies (Michael Van Lue and Tracy Piette), counseling in communication disorders (Todd Campbell), developmental disorders (Erica Shiefflee), and pediatric swallowing (Katherine Frontier). All of our speakers were knowledgeable and engaging and students found the lectures to be informative and interesting. During breaks, students were given opportunities to speak informally with keynote speakers as well as tour Marquette laboratories and discuss academic research options. After attending the morning counseling session, audiology students received information regarding the state licensing exam and met with a Marquette student with bilateral cochlear implants (CI) to discuss college and life with CI.
After lunch, students engaged in interactive care team panel discussions and were able to choose two presentations from among panels focused on pediatric communication disorders, adult communication disorders, audiology, and parent view of professional service for children with hearing impairment. Professions represented in the panels included school and medical SLP, AuD. PT, OT, and clinical dietitian. Specialty areas of physical therapy included child PT, adult PT, and vestibular issues. Speciality areas of SLP included elementary and middle school SLP, bilingual SLP, NICU/pediatric SLP, dysphagia, and motor speech. Panel members discussed the unique aspects of their professions and the ways they collaborate and work as a team. Students were encouraged to participate in the sessions and benefited greatly from the knowledge and advice of our various panel members.
Throughout the course of the weekend, students learned valuable information related to the fields of speech language pathology and audiology. Additionally, students were given opportunities to form connections and build relationships with fellow students and professionals. Sixty student WSHA memberships were awarded along with a large number of door prizes ranging from a free night at the Ambassador Hotel in Milwaukee to a coffee mug. We were thrilled with the turn-out at this year's WSHA Student weekend and we would like to thank everyone who was involved in making this event a success. We'll see you next year at UW Whitewater!
