NSSLHA Chapter Update from UWSP

It has once again been a busy two months with UWSP NSSLHA. We have lots of updates to share with you!

In November, some of our NSSLHA officers gave tours of the UWSP Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic to CSD underclassmen. Our members learned where to locate professor offices, clinical materials, and learned about the type of services our clinic provides. A few of our graduate students presented research at the national ASHA convention. Our chapter was fortunate enough to have them attend one of our meetings to discuss their research and talk about their ASHA conference experience. At each of our meetings, we have been talking about the upcoming WSHA conference in the Wisconsin Dells. We have many members signed up who are interested in going in February! UWSP NSSLHA is very excited and should be well-represented at the upcoming conference.

Our chapter has done lots of fundraising as well! Our chapter designed UWSP NSSLHA chapter sweatshirts. They are worn quite often by our members, and the NSSLHA spirit can be seen all over campus! In addition, we held a decorate-a-mug event. A mom of one of our officers has an art studio and helped us coordinate this event. Members were able to decorate a coffee mug and have it sent off to be finished for them! This served as a fun social event right before finals, and we were able to fundraise from it as well! At each of our meetings, our chapter has also been selling buttons. One of our officers has a button maker and has been mass-producing lots of buttons to sell. Each of the buttons has unique speech-language pathology or audiology sayings and puns. They have been a huge hit, and many of our members have purchased one (or many)!

UWSP NSSLHA has volunteered extensively in the Stevens Point community over the last couple of months. Our chapter continues to volunteer with a local skilled nursing facility and a children’s museum. Around Christmas time, UWSP NSSLHA participates in one of its favorite events. Each year, we receive a family in need of extra help around the holidays. We had a family of four adults and four children this year. Our chapter really came through and purchased everything on the family’s wish list and then some! Some of the items purchased were clothing, toys, gift cards, and food for a holiday meal!

During finals week, UWSP NSSLHA held “Coffee and Cram.” In the student lounge of the UWSP Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic, coffee and cookies were provided for students to enjoy while studying for finals. In addition, we also held “Puppy Palooza!” Various professors and members brought their dogs for our members to play with and de-stress before finals! Both events were new for UWSP NSSLHA and were a huge success!
