Grants and Scholarships
The WSHA Foundation awards are announced at the annual WSHA Convention in the spring of each year. Each grant carries its own set of eligibility criteria and procedures. All application materials must be received by the Foundation on or before the specified date each year. Incomplete or late applications will be disqualified. The WSHA Foundation does not discriminate based on race, color, creed, age, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.

About
The WSHA Foundation is a nonprofit entity created to enhance the discipline of communication sciences and disorders through student scholarships and research grants that benefit individuals with communication disorders. Donors may designate scholarship or research for their contributions, or indicate their contributions as undesignated. Donors also may name a scholarship or research grant and determine the criteria of the recipient when $500 or more is donated within a year. This is the perfect way to honor a loved one.
Mission
To enhance the discipline of communication sciences and disorders through student scholarships and research grantsGoalsThe WSHA Foundation is a nonprofit entity created to enhance the discipline of communication sciences and disorders through student scholarships and research grants that benefit individuals with communication disorders. Our goal is to have 97% of donations to the Foundation and interest earned from donations used to support scholarship and research grants. To ensure this goal, management services are being donated and Board members will be asked to serve at their own expense.Donors to the Foundation may designate scholarship or research for their contributions, or indicate their contributions as undesignated. Donors also may name a scholarship or research grant and determine the criteria of the recipient when $500 or more is donated within a year. This is the perfect way to honor a loved one.

Gifts to the Foundation
The Foundation offers six levels of giving.
To ensure ongoing, highly qualified audiology and speech-language pathology professionals in Wisconsin, we encourage you to commit to one of the following levels, and to make the WSHA Foundation part of your annual giving plan.
Friend: up to $99
Guardian: $100–$249 annually
Patron: $250–$499 annually
Sponsor: $500–$999 annually
Benefactor: $1000–$4999 annually
Champion: $5000+ annually
Research Grants
The WSHA Foundation now sponsors one annual research grant competition, and the award will be announced at the Association's Convention in the spring of each year. Jack Kile Scholarship
This annual scholarship is sponsored by Jack Kile, Ph.D., CCC-A. Dr. Kile's passion for audiology has influenced countless professionals in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. The scholarship was established for students with an indicated interest in pediatric audiology or educational audiology at either the undergraduate or graduate level.
Guidelines for Application:
This scholarship will be presented at the WSHA Convention
in the spring of each year. The amount to be awarded during
the WSHA Convention will be $1,000.
The intent is for the money to be used toward education costs.
To apply for the scholarship, a student must meet the following
conditions:
- Be a graduate student in his or her first year of an accredited graduate program in audiology in the state of Wisconsin, or be an undergraduate with the goal of going on to graduate school in audiology.
- Have a career goal of pediatric audiology or educational audiology.
- Submit two letters of recommendations that describe clinical and academic abilities. These letters may be from faculty members or practicum supervisors.
Submit a completed application form along with an official
transcript of all graduate coursework.

Judy Kulpa Scholarship
This annual scholastic award will be presented at the WSHA Convention each spring. This scholarship is sponsored by the family and friends of Judy Kulpa in honor of her outstanding clinical skills, leadership, and service to the profession of communication disorders.
Guidelines for Application
The scholastic award will be presented at the WSHA Convention
in the spring of each year. The amount to be awarded during
the WSHA Convention will be $1,000.
While there are no restrictions on how the money is to be
spent, the intent is for it to be used toward education or
research. To apply for the Judy Kulpa Scholarship, a student
must meet the following conditions:
- Enrollment in an CAA accredited graduate or doctoral program
in the state of Wisconsin at the time of application.
- Majoring in Speech-Language Pathology with an emphasis on health-related service.
- Completion of two semesters (at least 18 hours) of graduate-level course work.
- Career goal of working in a hospital setting in speech-language pathology preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and/or interest in business as it relates to speech-language pathology preferred.
- Submission of two letters of recommendation, which describe the student's clinical, academic, and leadership abilities. These letters may be from faculty members or supervisors of practicum.
Submission of an application form together with an official transcript of graduate course work.

Risa Mari Otto Scholarship
This memorial scholarship is sponsored by the family and friends of Risa Mari Otto, M.S., CCC--SLP. Risa earned her degree while under treatment for a malignant brain tumor which ultimately caused her death in October 2001. Risa was 28 years old. It is the hope of the various sponsors that Risa's spark and professional enthusiasm will be perpetuated by the recipients of this award who will commit to treat Hispanic clients in their future work as speech-language pathologists .
Guidelines for Application:
This award will be presented during the WSHA Convention. The amount of $2,000 is intended to be
used for expenses of graduate school education. To apply,
the student is required to meet these guidelines:
- Be a student in an accredited graduate program for speech-language pathology in the state of Wisconsin.
- Demonstrate ability in spoken Spanish with a minimum of 20 undergraduate credits in the Spanish language.
- Submit two letters of recommendations, which describe clinical and academic abilities. These letters may be from faculty members or supervisors of practicum.
- Submit a completed application form along with an official transcript of all graduate coursework.
Preference will be given to those students who have acquired Spanish speaking skills and who intend to seek employment in facilities which serve the Hispanic community.

Gladys McKinley Scholarship
This annual scholarship is sponsored by Thinking Publications to honor Gladys McKinley. This award has been named for Gladys McKinley, whose only child (Michael) married Nancy McKinley, founder of Thinking Publications, a professional publishing house financially supported in its early years by reserves in the McKinley family. Gladys was a rural schoolteacher in northern Minnesota during the 1930s and 40s and loved children.
Guidelines for Application:
This scholarship will be presented at the WSHA convention
in the spring of each year. The amount to be awarded during
the WSHA Convention will be $1,000.
While there are no restrictions on how the money is to be
spent, the intent is for it to be used toward education. To
apply for the scholarship, a student must meet the following
conditions:
- Be in a speech-language pathology program in an accredited
graduate program in the state of Wisconsin.
- Demonstrate financial need as documented by a written
statement in the application.
- Submit two letters of recommendations that describe clinical
and academic abilities. These letters may be from faculty
members or supervisors of practicum.
- Submit a completed application form along with an official
transcript of all graduate coursework.
Preference will be given to students from rural farm backgrounds and to those planning to seek employment in schools or medical facilities serving small rural communities.

Nancy McKinley Scholarship
This annual scholarship is sponsored by Thinking Publications to honor Nancy Lee McKinley. The award is named for Nancy McKinley-an accomplished Speech-Language Pathologist, who contributed immensely to the profession as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the public schools, as a university professor, and as the founder of Thinking Publications. Nancy was an internationally recognized expert on adolescent language disorders: she presented workshops and co-authored numerous journal articles and books on this topic and advocated for provision of services to older students.
Guidelines for Application:
This scholarship will be presented at the WSHA Convention
in the spring of each year. The amount to be awarded during
the WSHA Convention will be $1,000.
While there are no restrictions on how the money is to be
spent, the intent is for it to be used toward education. To
apply for the scholarship, a student must meet the following
conditions:
- Be in a speech-language pathology program in an accredited
graduate program in the state of Wisconsin.
- Demonstrate financial need as documented by a written
statement in the application.
- Submit two letters of recommendations that describe clinical
and academic abilities. These letters may be from faculty
members or supervisors of practicum.
- Submit a completed application form along with an official
transcript of all graduate coursework.
Preference will be given to students who have an interest in the public school setting and a special emphasis on older students with communication disorders. Please indicate in your application what you will do in your employment setting to promote services for older students and advocate for their needs.

The Judith H. and David J. Ward Scholarship
This annual scholarship is sponsored by Judith Hart Ward, a speech-language pathologist whose primary professional interest has been in working with students in the public schools who have communication difficulties, and David J. Ward, Judy's husband, whose career has been as a professor and administrator in the University of Wisconsin System. Both are natives of Wisconsin and were educated in Wisconsin public schools and the University of Wisconsin.
Guidelines for Application
This scholarship will be presented at the WSHA Convention
in the spring of each year to a student with an indicated
interest in providing speech and language services in schools.
The amount to be awarded during the WSHA Convention will be $1,000. The intent is for it to be used
for educational costs. To apply for this award, a student
must meet the following conditions
- Be a graduate student in his or her first year of an M.S.
or M.A. program.
- Be enrolled in a speech-language pathology program in
an accredited graduate program in the state of Wisconsin.
- Submit two letters of recommendation that describe clinical
and academic abilities. These letters may be from faculty
members or supervisors of practicum.
- Submit a completed application form along with an official
transcript of all graduate coursework.
Preference will be given to those students intending to seek employment in schools serving early childhood and K-12 students. Those intending to work with the birth-to-three populations may also apply.

Friends of WSHA Foundation Scholarship
This annual scholarship is sponsored by various WSHA members and related colleagues. These individuals care deeply about the discipline of communication sciences and disorders and the success of the students studying today.
Guidelines for Application:
This scholarship will be presented at the WSHA Convention
in the spring of each year. The amount to be awarded during
the WSHA Convention will be $1,500.
The intent is for the money to be used toward education. To
apply for the scholarship, a student must meet the following
conditions:
- Be a graduate student in his or her first year of an M.S.
or M.A. program.
- Be enrolled in a speech-language pathology program in
an accredited graduate program in the state of Wisconsin.
- Submit two letters of recommendation that describe clinical
and academic abilities. These letters may be from faculty
members or supervisors of practicum.
- Submit a completed application form along with an official
transcript of all graduate coursework.
Preference will NOT be given to students with financial need. All applicants who qualify are encouraged to apply.

Stanley Ewanowski Scholastic Award
This annual scholastic award is sponsored by the Wisconsin Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Association to honor Dr. Stanley Ewanowski. The scholastic award has been named for Dr. Stanley Ewanowski because of his many years of outstanding service to the professions as clinician, teacher, and researcher as well as for his leadership in both WSHA and ASHA.
Guidelines for Application:
The scholastic award will be presented at the WSHA Convention
in the spring of each year. The amount to be awarded during
the WSHA Convention will be $600.
While there are no restrictions on how the money is to be
spent, the intent is for it to be used toward education. To
apply for the scholastic award, a student must meet the following
conditions
- Enrollment in an CAA accredited graduate program in the
state of Wisconsin at the time of application. The award
can be received following graduation.
- Majoring in either Audiology or Speech-Language Pathology.
- Completion of two semesters (at least 18 hours) of graduate level course work.
- Submission of three letters of recommendation which describe the student's clinical and academic abilities. These letters may be from faculty members or supervisors of practicum.
- Submission of an application form together with an official transcript of graduate coursework.
