The Parkinson’s Playhouse is a community education program designed to promote open communication about some of the tough issues surrounding Parkinson’s Disease, including receiving the diagnosis, giving up driving, and sharing the diagnosis at the workplace. The program is an original collaboration between the University of Wisconsin Department of Theatre and Drama - Theatre for Social and Cultural Awareness and the Voice and Swallow Clinic, Division of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Theatre students met with Parkinson’s patients and then wrote original scripts for two plays that targeted issues that individuals have to deal with when diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. The original event was performed for World Voice Day 2007 and offered as community education for the Parkinson’s community, which included patients, caregivers and health care providers. Following the performance of each play, the theatre students facilitated discussion with the audience regarding the issues presented. WSHA-P attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss the subject matter and skits with the theatre students. This is a unique opportunity to participate in an interactive and dynamic discussion of Parkinson’s Disease.
