ASHA Presents a Reinstatement Opportunity
For Past CCC Holders in Audiology
On January 1, 2007, ASHA implemented the new Standards for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Audiology. The Council for Clinical Certification is offering all those whose CCC has lapsed due to non-payment of annual fees or personal resignation the opportunity to reinstate under the old, 1993 standards.
Anyone who falls in the above category and has not recently received an invitation to reinstate through the mail may call the Action Center at 1-800-498-2071.
This offer will expire on December 21, 2007. After that date, the policy is as follows:
- If lapsed less than 5 years – submit a reinstatement application form, the fee, and evidence of professional development hours based on the number of years lapsed.
- If lapsed more than 5 years – submit a new application for certification with the appropriate fee, obtain a passing score on the Praxis series examination within 5 years of application for reinstatement, complete a modified Clinical Fellowship (12 weeks duration), and accumulate 30 contact hours of professional development for the 3 years prior to the application for reinstatement.
Information on the 2007 Standards for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology can be found on the ASHA Web site at http://www.asha.org/about/membership-certification/certification/aud_standards_new.htm. We encourage all those who are providing services to take advantage of this special offer.

Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE), along with eleven other senators, recently introduced S.1159, the IDEA Full Funding Act. It is similar to a bill introduced by Congressman Chris Van Hollen D-MD) in the House of Representatives, H.R. 821, the Everyone deserves Unconditional Access to Education (EDUCATE) Act, which would gradually increase IDEA funding to 40% by 2016.
Although the federal government committed to contribute up to 40% of the cost of implementing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), it currently only contributes about 17%. The states pay the remaining 83% of the costs. S. 1159 would increase federal funding for IDEA with mandatory funds over the next eight years (2015) and would ensure that the federal government "fully fund" its commitment to pay 40% of IDEA.

New Guidelines on Swallowing in Schools Available on ASHA's Website
The "Guidelines for Speech-Language Pathologists Providing Swallowing and Feeding Services in Schools" is now available on ASHA's Web site at www.asha.org/policy. The document was developed by Emily Homer, Sheryl
Amaral, Joan Arvedson, Randy Kurjan, Cindy O'Donoghue, and Joan Sheppard. It was supported by Division 13 Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia) and Division 16 (School-Based Issues) and was approved by the Legislative Council in February.
The guidelines address issues such as educational relevance, setting up a dysphagia team, and different models and procedures for delivering
services.
